Crash Injuries

What a collision does to your body

A car doesn't have to be badly damaged for you to be hurt. Even a low-speed rear-ending sends enough force through the neck and spine to strain ligaments, irritate discs, and leave muscles locked in spasm. Dr. Fred examines what actually happened to the tissue — not just where it hurts today.

Injuries we treat after a motor-vehicle accident include:

  • Whiplash
  • Neck pain & stiffness
  • Low-back pain
  • Mid-back & rib pain
  • Post-crash headaches
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Sciatica
  • Disc herniation
  • Numbness & tingling
  • Jaw & TMJ pain
  • Muscle spasm
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping

The First Few Days

Feeling "fine" after a crash is normal — and misleading

Adrenaline and swelling routinely mask soft-tissue damage for the first 24 to 72 hours. Whiplash in particular tends to announce itself two or three days later, once the inflammation sets in and the neck stiffens. By then, patients who waited are often further from a full recovery than those who came in right away.

Getting examined early does two things at once:

  • It shortens your recovery. Restoring motion before scar tissue lays down usually means fewer visits and less lingering pain.
  • It protects your claim. A long gap between the accident and your first visit is the single most common reason an insurer argues your injury didn't come from the crash.

If you were in an accident weeks or months ago and never got checked, it's still worth coming in — call us and we'll tell you honestly where you stand.

Step by Step

What to do after an accident in Oregon

If you're reading this from a parking lot with a sore neck, here's the short version.

  1. Get checked for anything urgent

Severe head injury, loss of consciousness, chest pain, a possible fracture, or numbness that isn't resolving belong in an emergency room first. Chiropractic care comes after those are ruled out.

  2. Report the accident to your own insurer

Call your carrier and tell them you were in a collision and want to open a PIP claim. They'll give you a claim number. That's the number we need — and opening it is what triggers your no-fault medical benefits.

  3. Write down what you feel — daily

Note pain, stiffness, headaches, sleep trouble, and anything you can't do at work or at home. Memories fade and symptoms shift; a simple log becomes valuable documentation later.

  4. Get examined within a few days

Call or text us with your claim number and we'll get you in for a thorough injury evaluation. Bring your insurance card, the claim number, and any imaging you already have.

  5. Let us handle the paperwork

We bill your PIP carrier directly, keep the records your claim requires, and coordinate with your attorney if you have one. You focus on getting your neck and back working again.

Oregon PIP

The coverage you're already paying for

Oregon requires Personal Injury Protection on every auto policy. It's no-fault coverage — it pays for your treatment after a crash regardless of who caused it.

$15,000 Minimum medical benefits

Per person, on every Oregon auto policy. Many drivers carry more.

2 years Window to use them

PIP covers reasonable and necessary treatment for two years from the accident date.

70% Of lost wages

Up to $3,000 a month if your injuries keep you off work 14 consecutive days or more.

$0 Typical cost to start

We bill your PIP carrier directly, so most patients begin care with nothing out of pocket.

Figures reflect the statutory minimums for Oregon auto policies. Your own coverage may be higher, and your policy governs your benefits — we'll verify yours for free before you commit to anything.

The Question Everyone Asks

"Won't my rates go up if I use it?"

Using PIP isn't an at-fault claim.

PIP benefits are paid on a no-fault basis, which means a PIP claim isn't recorded as an at-fault claim against you. Oregon drivers pay for this coverage every month specifically so it's there after a collision — declining to use it doesn't earn you a discount, it just leaves you paying for care the policy was meant to cover.

Your own limits and terms are set by your policy. Your insurer or agent can confirm the specifics, and we're glad to review your benefits with you at no charge. This is general information, not legal or insurance advice.

It's the most common reason people we see delayed treatment — sometimes for weeks, occasionally until their two-year window had nearly closed. If that worry is what's holding you back, call us and ask. We'll give you a straight answer even if it means telling you that you don't need us.

Billing

How your care gets paid for

We handle the billing in this order, so you're not fronting money for an injury you didn't ask for.

1. Your PIP

First stop, and usually the only one. We open the claim with your auto carrier and bill them directly — no copay, no invoice to you.

2. Health insurance or MedPay

If your PIP limits run out before you're finished healing, we move to your medical insurance or MedPay coverage and keep your care going.

3. Attorney lien

When a case is pending, we can accept a lien and be paid out of the settlement — so treatment isn't on hold waiting for the claim to resolve.

Not sure what coverage you have? Bring us your claim number, or just your insurer's name, and we'll find out for you. More on insurance & billing →

For Attorneys & Their Clients

Records that hold up

A personal-injury claim lives or dies on documentation. We've worked alongside Portland-metro attorneys long enough to know exactly what a file needs — objective exam findings, measured range of motion, a defensible treatment rationale, and a clear causal link back to the collision.

  • Thorough initial evaluation with objective, repeatable findings
  • Narrative reports and records released promptly on request
  • Referral for imaging or specialist evaluation when findings call for it
  • Liens accepted so care continues while the case is pending

Don't have an attorney and think you might need one? We can point you toward reputable local firms — no obligation, and we take no referral fee. Plenty of our patients never need one at all.

Auto Injury FAQ

Straight answers about crash care

Will using my PIP raise my insurance rates?

Personal Injury Protection is no-fault coverage that Oregon requires on every auto policy, and benefits are paid regardless of who caused the crash. A PIP claim isn't treated as an at-fault claim against you, which is coverage you already pay for. Whether a claim affects your premium depends on your policy and insurer, so ask your agent. Your own limits and terms are set by your policy — your insurer or agent can confirm the specifics of your plan, and we'll review your benefits with you at no charge.

How much does Oregon PIP cover?

Every Oregon auto policy carries at least $15,000 in PIP medical benefits per person, available for reasonable and necessary treatment within two years of the accident. PIP also covers 70% of lost wages up to $3,000 a month if your injuries keep you from working for 14 consecutive days or more. Many drivers carry higher limits than the minimum — we'll check yours.

Do I need a police report, a referral, or an attorney to be treated?

None of the three. You can call or text us directly and we'll open your PIP claim with your insurer. If you already have an attorney, we'll coordinate with their office and provide whatever documentation they need.

What if the accident was my fault?

Your PIP still pays for your treatment. PIP is first-party, no-fault coverage on your own policy — it applies whether you caused the crash or someone else did.

I felt fine after the crash but now I hurt. Is that normal?

Very. Adrenaline and inflammation often mask soft-tissue injuries for the first 24 to 72 hours, and whiplash symptoms commonly surface a few days later. Getting evaluated early puts a baseline in your record and starts treatment before the tissue stiffens into a longer recovery.

How soon after an accident should I be seen?

As soon as you reasonably can — ideally within the first few days. Early care tends to shorten recovery, and a documented gap between the crash and your first visit is one of the most common reasons an insurer questions whether the injury came from the accident.

Will I owe anything out of pocket?

Most auto-injury patients start care with nothing out of pocket, because we bill your PIP carrier directly. If those benefits are exhausted we look at your health insurance, MedPay, or — when an attorney is involved — an agreement to be paid from the settlement. We'll always tell you where you stand before care continues.

What if I was a passenger, a cyclist, or a pedestrian?

You're likely still covered. PIP follows people as well as vehicles: passengers are generally covered under the policy of the car they were riding in, and pedestrians and cyclists struck by a vehicle are often covered by the driver's PIP. Call or text us and we'll help you sort out which policy applies to you.

My accident was months ago. Is it too late?

Probably not — PIP medical benefits generally run for two years from the accident date. Come in and let us evaluate you. If we don't think we can help, we'll say so and point you somewhere that can.

Do you coordinate with personal injury attorneys?

Yes — regularly, with firms across the Portland metro area. We provide thorough records and narrative reports on request and can accept a lien so treatment continues while your case is pending.
